The Holy Trinity of Pop
The holy trinity of 1980s pop – and Michael Jackson were all born in 1958. There are numerous links between Madonna and Prince and Madonna and MJ.
MJ was Madonna’s date to the 1991 Academy Awards where she famously performed Sooner Or Later which went on to win the Oscar for best original song for songwriter Stephen Sondheim.
Madonna and Prince collaborated on ‘Love Song‘ – track three on the Like A Prayer album – with Prince also providing an uncredited guitar solo to the album’s closing track ‘Act Of Contrition‘. Madonna and Prince were also label mates for over 15 years, both recording for Warner Bros.
Madonna was due to duet with MJ on his track ‘In The Closet‘ from his Dangerous album and speculation was rife for years that she had provided the breathy female vocal, but in the end it was confirmed that that honour went to Princess Stephanie of Monaco. Madonna and MJ have both recorded songs called Human Nature and both have released a single called One More Chance.
Both Madonna and Prince were expected to feature on MJ’s ‘We Are The World‘ record but neither eventually made it. Madonna starred at Live Aid instead whereas Prince went on to record his own song for the Live Aid project.
Both Madonna and Prince are tiny, both Madonna and MJ are famous for grabbing their crotches in public, whereas Prince just grabbed anything in sight.
Madonna famously went after the top manager in the music business – Freddie De Man who was at the time managing MJ. Without the three of them the 1980s would have been very different and as a result so would music today!
