The Right Prop
While working on a tour, having Madonna scrapping your ideas can be easy if you don’t have… the “right prop”.
In the “Candy Perfume Girl” scene during the Drowned World Tour, Alex Magno‘s original idea was to have a crazy,
menacing character with broken dolls, pieces of dolls inside of his backpack. A sort of a doll maker with supernatural
powers that is capable of turning a woman’s head (Tamara the dancer) by just turning a doll’s head.
“Basically it was a concept about a crazy killer that stalks strippers. When we showed to Madonna
she freaked out”, Alex told us laughing.”The prop guy instead of giving me a doll with no face, gave me one that looked
like a
three year old girl. But Madonna wanted to see it and I told her that it was not the right prop and it wasn’t
going to look right. But she insisted. When I showed it to her she freaked
out because she is a mum and told me I was a pervert (laughs). It was funny and everybody laughed and
made fun of me. And it obviously didn’t end up in the tour but nevertheless the idea is still there as we were
able to use some of the stuff, like the backpack, the glove, etc.”
