This is a new song…
Despite not technically being sold as a ‘Greatest Hits’ tour, 2004’s Re-Invention Tour spectacle is unique among Madonna‘s touring history in that it is the only of her shows that started with a song which did not come off an album released since her previous tour.
In 1985, ‘Dress You Up‘ opened the show, taken from the ‘Like A Virgin’ album released after her promo tour. The Who’s That Girl Tour began with ‘Open Your Heart‘, taken from the ‘True Blue’ album released after the Virgin Tour. ‘Express Yourself‘ kicked off Blond Ambition, taken from the ‘Like A Prayer’ album, released a year earlier. The title track from 1992’s ‘Erotica‘ album launched the setlist for 1993’s Girlie Show and ‘Drowned World/Substitute For Love’, recorded five years after The Girlie Show, started the tour which took it’s name from the song.
However, in 2004, Re-Invention, technically to support the ‘American Life’ album, began with songs recorded over a decade earlier, irrespective of whether you consider the opening track to be ‘The Beast Within‘ or ‘Vogue‘.
Business returned to normal with 2006’s Confessions Tour which opened with current track ‘Future Lovers‘.
If we do get the heavily rumoured Greatest Hits tour next year to celebrate her 25 years of success will it begin with a new track or an old one? We’ll wait and see….
