Melissa Young’s Madonna Birthday Tribute
Our friend Melissa Young wants to give M-Tribers a sneak peek at her new Madonna Tribute show:
Lucky Star – Madonna at 50: A Birthday Tribute
M-Tribe: Hi Melissa, how did you come up with this amazing idea?
Melissa Young:
The show has been in the making for a long time, but started because I became know around town(Chicago) for my jazz version of Like a Virgin. Then I thought “What if I did this with other Madonna songs? Would that even work?” and then I remembered the Swing version of “Deeper and Deeper” from the Re-Invention tour and I knew, oh yea, this is brilliant.
M-Tribe: What’s your favourite number in your show?
Melissa Young: “Material Girl, The Musical” is my favorite so far (I do what I think the opening number would be, “Material Girl” and what I think the closing number would be for Material Girl the Musical “Live To Tell” of course!) but I have to say, “What It Feels Like for a Girl” al-la Judy garland power, break your heart in pieces on the floor, ballad is not anything to be over looked.
M-Tribe: What’s your idea of Madonna and how do you put that in the show?
Melissa Young: I know a lot about Madonna, have read, watched, loved her for all of her career and know this is something she would be excited about. Breaking even Madonna’s rules and switching up her own music is something she does all the time on tour and being a cabaret singer, I don’t have a full rock band and electric sound machines, but I have a piano, my voice… and a deep admiration and love for Madonna.
With the help of Chicago’s own cabaret legend, Daryl Nitz directing and the amazing Mark Burnell musical directing the show is really not to be missed. I hope Madonna fans can come on out and love the magic of Madonna’s very versatile music with me. I’m looking forward to it!
M-Tribe: thanks Melissa!
