Happy Birthday LAP
20 years ago today (March 21 1989), Madonna and Warner Bros were releasing an album that is considered by many a true masterpiece: “Like A Prayer“.
Introduced in the media by a controversial video by Mary Lambert (in which Madonna’s character, after witnessing a crime, dreamed of being innocently kissed on her forehead by a statue of a black saint and lated kissed less innocently on the lips by real guy looking like the previous mentioned Saint), Like A Prayer has been defined by critics as real masterpiece showing us how close pop music can get to true Art.
With incredible songs co-written with Patrick Leonard and Stephen Bray, Like A Prayer delivered some great moments to the Madonna myth: The title track which has become one of the most popular Madonna songs ever, the Express Yourself song, video and motto, the first ever video directed by Herb Ritts (Cherish), the touching “Promise To Try” and sad imagery of the Oh Father video directed by newcomer David Fincher.
Oh.. notable are also the Prince collaboration and the vocal solo of Nicki Harris in the Like A Prayer gospel part.
Today, twenty years later, we listened to this album and fell in love with it as if it was the first time and just like a prayer it “took us there”! Happy Birthday Like A Prayer!
