I’m misunderstood like Wallis, says Madonna
Madonna has told Sky News she and Wallis Simpson are similarly misunderstood as she attended the premiere of her film about the American divorcee.
The singer turned director was on the red carpet as the film, WE, was screened as part of the 55th BFI London Film Festival.
Madonna said: “I do know what it’s like to be misunderstood on a global scale. She lived at a time when women didn’t have opportunities like we do now. She didn’t have the chance to defend herself so I’m taking that opportunity now.”
Having worked in the spotlight for three decades, the Queen of Pop says that she no longer takes notice of the critics.
“Even when I try something old and try music I come up against the critics. I cope by not reading anything,” she said.
The star spent three years researching the Duke and Duchess of Windsor before starting filming the project and says she was intrigued by their story.
“I just think it’s really fascinating to try to understand the nature of their romance. And why a man of that power would give up his throne for her.”
Asked if she had any plans to return to acting or do more directing, Madonna told Sky she is returning to music and is already planning a new record.
