Madonna’s magic endures for Vancouver fans
For many fans, it was like being touched for the very first time.
In one week, it will have been exactly 30 years since Madonna first seduced the music industry with her debut single, Everybody, in 1982.
Even so, the Queen of Pop continued to reign supreme Saturday on the Vancouver stop of her worldwide MDNA tour.
She’s just amazing. All the images through the years I’ve been a lifelong fan, said Sonja Hayes-Powers Saturday prior to entering Rogers Arena for the show.
We’ve made up many dance routines to her music, said friend Tara Jenkins.
The pair, wearing matching dresses with sequined images of Madonna, had flown in from Calgary for the concert after winning VIP tickets through a Madonna fan club contest.
It was love at first sight. My dad actually borrowed the Like A Virgin tour video . . . brought it home from work and I watched it, watched it, watched it, Hayes-Powers, 37, recalled of her early memories of the pop icon.
The first time she saw Madonna in concert was in 1987, some 25 years ago.
While other fans questioned whether Madonna still held the same sex appeal from years past, there was no question that her songs and iconic costumes had left a searing mark in the collective memory of pop fans.
More importantly, the effect Madge has had on paving the way for female artists and fans is incomparable.
It was very inspirational. I mean, she did the first of everything, said longtime Carolyn Stertz, 38.
Stertz showed off a new $500 tattoo she had done recently a side profile portrait of Madonna herself on the back of her left shoulder.
When you’re feeling down and you were picked on, her music always made me feel better. She’s just always been my idol, Stertz said.
