Raising Malawi continued commitment to Malawi

Raising Malawi sent an email to their friends and supporters to thank them for their continued support and also to provide them with an update on their programs.

“The past year has brought important changes for our organization and we’ve made adjustments which will enable us to continue to achieve our mission of supporting orphans and vulnerable children in Malawi.

It has also been an eventful period for the country of Malawi. Deep economic crisis and political turmoil have characterized the past several months, with many Malawians experiencing serious challenges in their daily lives. On April 5, Malawi’s president, Bingu wa Mutharika, passed away making his Vice President Joyce Banda the second female president in Africa. This is a critical time for Malawi as President Banda attempts to steer Malawi back toward more successful times. It is also a crucial moment for the friends of Malawi to continue to show their support.

Raising Malawi remains a committed friend to Malawi and has expanded support in 2012 into the area of education. We are thrilled about our new partnership with the non-profit organization buildOn. Together we are building 10 new schools in rural communities in Malawi. These schools will have the capacity to educate over 1,000 children annually. Our approach includes deep community involvement and a sustainable school model which can be replicated across the country, putting more of Malawi’s children in the classroom.

We broke ground on the first school in Kankhumbwa on February 14, and the project is set to be completed ahead of schedule thanks to a total of 1,190 volunteer work days provided by local community members. Construction on the second school in Mzoweza is currently underway to be completed in June 2012, providing a space to learn for children in the area who currently attend classes outdoors. Construction is also underway on the third school in Jembe, to be completed in July 2012. A photo of children who will benefit from the school in Kankhumbwa is below.
