The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier now in San Francisco
The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk exhibition has opened at the de Young Museum in San Francisco on Saturday and runs until August 19 in the Herbst Exhibition Galleries.
The first exhibition devoted to the celebrated French designer and his personal themes of equality, diversity and perversity debuted at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts last June and has now reached the de Young with its multimedia installation organized along six different thematic sections tracing the influences, from the streets of Paris to the world of science fiction, that have marked the couturier’s creative development.
The six sections are: The Odyssey of Jean Paul Gaultier, The Boudoir – which explores Gaultier’s fascination with lingerie and underpinnings culminating in his signature collaboration with Madonna for her Blond Ambition tour, Skin Deep, Punk Cancan, Urban Jungle and Metropolis – a presentation of Gaultier’s work for film, performance pieces and his relationships with pop icons such as Kylie Minogue and Tina Turner.
Included in the exhibition are two iconic corsets from Madonna’s 1990 Blond Ambition World Tour that launched the cone bra into fashion iconography, that she has graciously lent thanks to her friendship with the fashion’s enfant terrible.
