”What’s up New York. It’s great to be home with you”
Longtime MadonnaTribe readers know that there is no Madonna concert in the City without an in-depth report from our Community member DyeAnotherDay.
And here is this year’s one, from last night’s MDNA Tour show at the Yankee Stadium. Thank you, S.!
I can’t imagine a better crowd for Madonna. Lots of guys, but also LOTS of women who clearly have looked up to Madonna for years and years. Really upbeat, a great mood. Surprisingly MUCH fewer drunken obnoxious dates than the Garden. Although some very pleasant date types. Bruce Weber was sitting in front of me. Lots of cool people. I was so happy, so thankful.
Avicii really rocked the room. A lot of fun, a good way to warm up the stadium. He finishes at 9:30 and the wait until 10:15 is torture.
Finally lights out. “Girl Gone Wild” must be seen live — YouTube does not do this justice. Truly, the stadium shakes, especially when the glass shatters. Madonna appears in an unflattering black cat suit that does nothing for her figure. She removes a veil, revealing a blonde Snooki poof and nude makeup. The troupe storms the stage for a tightly choreographed opener, followed by “Revolver” and the stunning video screens. A motel room rolls out onto the stage for “Gang Bang.”
I think where her previous tours have been more theatrical, this one I think is more cinematic.
After blowing away all those Fathers and Papas, the dancers lift Madonna above their heads. Her leopard skin bra pops off and her boobs pop out of her top. You can’t QUITE see her nips, but the twins definitely get some air. 🙂
On to more wardrobe malfunctions, Madonna begins to descend the stairs, stumbles, sits down — and shakes something out of her shoe! I remember one night in L.A, she performed “La Isla Bonita” with one shoe.
She takes the mike and says, “What’s up New York. It’s great to be home with you.” Madonna and New York are two combustible chemicals — the energy is fierce, really wonderful. She looks like she is very present, and delivers “I Don’t Give A,” which is very Madonna and the crowd loves it. “I’m gonna be allright.” She vanishes into the stage.
After “Best Friend/Heartbeat,” Madonna wraps up 40 minutes of unrelenting anger.
Okay, let’s talk about “Express Yourself.” While it is a crowd pleaser, maybe it should be shelved with “Material Girl.” Every time she sings it, it’s just too goofy: a disco wig for Girlie Show, military fatigues for RIT. Tonight, after the DARK opener, she washes it all way in all-white, with a more relaxes ‘do, cherry red lips, and, finally, a huge smile.
I’m not sure what her problem is, but she still looks very stiff in this song. She doesn’t seem to move well in the outfit. My personal least fave in the show, and I love(d) the song. Apparently, the 55,000 people in the audience don’t have computers, because they ERUPT for “Born This Way.” Goodness, don’t ask a New York queen to choose between M and Gaga, so let’s just say that it’s a fun high school competition. Perhaps explaining the bizarre cheerleader outfit.
When she struts to the end of the stage, I would say that her crump dance falls flat. It looks great in videos, but she is MUCH too stiff. Hopefully some people enjoy it, because it’s a great idea and a holdover from her Confessions period.
Finally I get a good look at her from my 8th row seat. I would say she looks absolutely beautiful. There are signs of plastic surgery, but also a bit of age. She looks a LOT better than some of her photos. Her eyes are INCREDIBLE. Her skin is AMAZING. I am happy to say that I love her.
While I was ready to poo-poo “Vogue,” which looks a little dull on the Olympia video, it really works in a large room. Hey, don’t crowds want the hits? And her outfit is BRIL-LIANT. Love it. Blonde Ambiton-worthy.
It struck me that she uses the different acts of the show to project her various images.
I think in the past, that image is been NEW, for one thing, and also more avant-garde (especially Drowned World), or current (like Girlie Show).
But this time, I guess she wants to project the images she’s worked hard on for 30 years.
Not only that, but the lines them up in their chronological order: the rebel first, then the lover, the fashion icon, the sex goddess, the politician, and finally the party girl.
I was surprised when I saw the setlist — I didn’t even believe it — but I like “Candy Shop.” It’s not as STALE as some stuff.
Ditto “Human Nature.” I’m glad she didn’t MASH UP every single hit on this tour.
But there are no nuggets for MDNA — no “Crazy for You,” “Burning Up,” “Lucky Star.”
What can you say about “Virgin“? She is brave, and it was as in-the-present as can be for her. It was one of the few honest moments in the show (along with “I Don’t Give A”).
Finally, she reappears in a shimmering silver floor length SOMETHING (I want one). The crowd LOVES “I’m Addicted,” and “I’m a Sinner” (which I hummed all the way home.)
And “Like a Prayer” went over the top. Arms reach out to touch her — the guards looked they were hard at work controlling the front lines. If she wanted a Triangle filled with crazies, she got it. Did she give them speed or something? My GOD were they wild.
And then she wraps it up with a really fun “Celebration,” which I guess takes the place of “Holiday.” Her body is warmed up, the outfit shows off her body, and she looks great.
Rocco was onstage with her. When she brought him out for “Open Your Heart,” I could not take my eyes off him.
Well, in previous tours, I was left with her message of the night: I traded fame for love. Don’t ever tell me to stop. It’s not my time to go. This is who I am, like it or not. You must love me.
Tonight, as I leave Yankee Stadium and my first MDNA show, I was left with: WHEN YOU CALL MY NAME. I guess that’s it for her right now. She wants her crown. Give it to her.
Thanks for reading this, and I’ll be back on Saturday.
