To Rule The World
There are have been plenty of memorable Madonna quotes over the years, proving the woman we respect and love has a great sense of irony and determination. From “I’m tough, I’m ambitious, and I know exactly what I want. If that makes me a bitch, okay”, to “Crucifixes are sexy because there’s a naked man on them!”
But probably almost 30 years later, the most famous thing she has ever said was in 1983 on Dick Clark‘s American Bandstand tv show.
Clark asked: “What do you hope will happen, not only in 1984 but for the rest of your professional life? What are your dreams? What’s left?” Madonna simply answered with her famous mixture of shyness and determination: “To rule the world!”
Even though American Bandstand” wasn’t Madonna’s first TV appearance, her visit to Clark’s show is considered by many a seminal event in what went on to be one of the most legendary careers in pop culture history. It’s where things really began, months before singing Like A Virgin at the first MTV awards in 1984.
When Clark died in April 2012, Madonna herself posted a message on her official Facebook page:
Rest in peace. You will be missed. Even though I told him in 1984 that I wanted to rule the world, it’s Dick Clark who ruled the world. He loved what he did and his energy and enthusiasm were boundless. A great man. I bow to his memory and everything he did with his life.
