Yellow Or White?
Hello Tribers, cd singles collectors among you will surely remember that in late 1995, almost simultaney with the release of her then latest single You’ll See,
the lovely Warner Music Germany pressed for the first time on cd a whole bunch of old
Madonna 12″ singles. This series is made of 23 singles – 5 for each of the three first albums, 3 for Who’s That Girl, 4 for Like A Prayer
and then just the lonely “Vogue” for I’m Breathless.
Let’s go more in detail:
From “The First Album” we had Everybody, Burning Up, Holiday, Borderline and Lucky Star.
From “Like A Virgin” we got Like A Virgin, Material Girl, Into The Groove, Angel and Dress You Up,
From “True Blue” they pressed “Live To Tell, Papa Don’t Preach, True Blue, Open Your Heart, La Isla Bonita.
From “Who’s That Girl” we got the 3 singles Who’s That Girl, Causing A Commotion and The Look Of Love
From “Like A Prayer” Warner went for Like A Prayer White Cover 12″, Like A Prayer Yellow Cover 12″, Express Yourself and Cherish
From “I’m Breathless” the main single, Vogue.
All these cds came with Yellow coloured discs with blue writings and a Sire Records logo. Since
there were multiple reprints over the years there can be different shades of yellow
from one print to the other. Apparently legend says there are also rare misprinted copies of “Like A Prayer Yellow Cover” where
the two colours were swapped by mistake (blue disc and yellow writings). But the strangest thing happened way back in summer 2005 when
while browsing a the Virgin store in Paris’ Champs-Élysées I stumbled upon four of these cds
(released for the first time 10 years earlier) and the discs were not yellow as they should have been
but they were instead white!!! with blue writings and logos!!!
There wasn’t an apparent reason to repress these particular cds (it isn’t completely clear if they were indeed German re-releases as the
originals or UK made re-pressings) and the four lucky titles also seems to have been selected randomly. They are Burning Up,
Bordeline, Causing A Commotion and Vogue!
So do you have them in your collection? As they are more limited and more hard to find these 4 titles can cost a little more if the person selling them
can spot the difference with the more common yellow ones.
See you next week!
xx
